Job PTSD & career moves on your own terms

When I was working for others, I always felt the pressure to keep my eye out for other jobs.

It wasn't that I was unhappy where I was working.

But I often set up email alerts and browsed job boards.

Why?

It made more sense when I heard it said from a coaching client recently. She said " I had Job PTSD. I never stopped looking for jobs because I lost my job enough times, I never knew when I was going to need to find a new one again."

UGH. YES. I feel this on a deep level because that was my experience too.

I've had a bunch of temporary roles with blurry timelines.

I've had my department re-organized, my team dissolved, and my role eliminated.

I've have teammates and bosses laid off unexpectedly.

I've been laid off unexpectedly.

Everytime, it was like a White Snake ballad playing in my head like "Here I go again on my owwwn, down the only road I've ever knowwwn"

Job PTSD made it so I rarely felt like my job was safe. And I kept a look out for new opportunities because I worried that something unexpected COULD be around the corner and I would need to find a new job soon.

If this resonates with you, know that you're not alone. The good news is there are actions you can take now to prepare for moments that are out of your control. And leave a job where you don't feel safe on your own terms.

Fill your toolkit to make the transitions easier BEFORE the break-up with your job, BEFORE the job hunt starts, BEFORE the big decisions need to be made, BEFORE the leap into something new. Feel good knowing the next move you make will fit your values, your non-negotiable needs, and your big picture...because you've done the work to figure that out already!
