Feeling bad at work - Is it me or is it them?
Q: "When it comes to work how do I know where the line is between knowing what’s me being too sensitive versus this not being a good fit culturally and not a good place to be long-term?"
Full Transcript:
Alrighty. So the question is when it comes to work, how do I know where the line is between knowing it's me being too sensitive versus it not being a good fit culturally and the company not being a good place to be long-term.
So toxic professionalism has conditioned us to believe that we need to suck it up. We need to be tough.
We need to let things slide. And I think it's important that we recognize that our, that our body's natural reaction to what's happening at work can be a sign.
It can be your body trying to tell you something, right? My nervous system is sounding the alarm: “I don't feel safe.”
And it doesn't feel good to be here. So I think it's like not a matter of like I'm being too sensitive, but it's, it's, it's questioning like, okay, well, where is that sensitivity coming from?
What is my body trying to tell me? And why do I feel unsafe? The other thing is it's important for us to recognize where our tolerance level is for b******t.
And I think COVID has actually decreased our b******t tolerance levels which is actually a good thing, right. We're saying we can't even anymore, I can't put up with all of this bad stuff that's happening.
Things that don't feel good at work and we're higher-ing our standards. So what that means we're, we're increasing our standards rather.
So, I think this is a good thing because what it's doing is it's forcing our employers to really take stock in what they're doing and their employee's wellbeing.
And to prioritize that because eventually employees will leave if they don't feel like they are in a supportive work environment.
The other piece of this question is like, well, how do I know if it's just not a good cultural fit or like a place that I want to be long-term.
So a few questions: do you have more soul-sucking days than gratifying days at work? Are you in a constant state of being tense and needing to like be alert and protect yourself, like be in this protection mode at work and then are you completely exhausted because of it?
So, you know, are you recognizing, or rather those things that are making you tense, is there capacity to change those things?
Are they changeable and W is your team or your leadership receptive to those changes? Will they be receptive if you advocate for those?
So these are all important questions to ask yourself. And if the answer is no, then that is a huge red flag.
So hopefully this helps, send me more of your questions. I love these juicy questions. I hope you enjoy your day.
